What is the best pellet for hunting small game?

what is the best pellet to use for Hunting small game such as squirrels, birds, snakes, rats? some say flathead some say pointed and is there any other types of pellets besides those?

the best pellets are domed, for accuracy
flat heads are good for a hard hitting pellet at close range

imo pointed pellets are usless, their not as accurate as domed pellets, neither are flat heads but that doesn’t matter at close range.

hollow points can be used in the same manor as flat heads.

.177 Lion brand from Japan at 16gr. heavy and accurate / both points seem equal to me.

The one your rifle shoots best(accuracy), and the only way to find that out is to shoot a variety of high quality pellets

"Generally" speaking for small game such as rabbit and squirrel, domed pellets are the most effective, because they have the highest ballistic coefficient they hit harder and penetrate deeper. And since you should, in the vast majority of cases** be making head shots. You need the penetration for a clean, humane kill.

Some reasonable priced domed pellets that perform well in a variety of rifles.
    JSB Exact Domed
    RWS Superdome
    Crosman Premier Domed
    H&N Field and Target

**With some powerful .22 caliber or .25 caliber air rifles(pellet guns) you can get away with taking heart/lung shots

    >>Birds<<
Wadcutters* are the most effective against birds, because you don’t so much need the penetration. You want the pellet to deliver all of it’s energy on target and not just zip right on through like a domed or pointed pellet would be likely to do.

The RWS Supermag makes a good hunting pellet for pest birds

*as was previously mentioned you can use "some" hollowpoint pellets in place of wadcutters. The Beeman Crow-Magnum would be the best example.

The best pellet for hunting small game is by far the JSB Predator Polymag. It combines expansion, penetration annd accuracy into one pellet. These are pricey so if on a budget then i would suggest Beeman Crow Magnum. It has a huge forward expansion cup to expand into the vitals. I have had good expiriences with this pellet on squirrels in my Storm out to 20 yards. good luck

Never use pointed pellets to heart shot game, they will pass straight through your animal and not make a clean kill. But if you headshot the then you can use a pointed pellet. And for using flat pellets, i wouldnt, they are ment for targets and not for game, hollowpoint are the best choice for hunting. http://www.pyramydair.com/s/p/Beeman_Crow_Magnum_177_Cal_8_80_Grains_Hollowpoint_500ct/298
