What are the good and bad points of whale hunting?

Bad points, it kills intelligent creatures, of whom there are few left, and it really doesn’t add anything positive for 6.4 Billion of us.
Good points? let me think and get back to you on that (I have NO idea!)

Plenty of people will tell you the bad points, so I’ll play devil’s advocate and try to think of good ones.
If any animal population is facing a shortage of food or other resources, and natural predation cannot bring the animal population down to a sustainable number quickly enough, then a certain amount of human hunting may be beneficial.
I saw something on my tax return about whalers who supplied Alaskan Native Americans with whale meat getting a tax credit of some kind. So, apparently whale meat is still giving somebody something to eat.
There are other whale products which the Japanese particularly have found a host of uses for, which the anti-whaling folks say are available in synthetic form and therefore should not be harvested from whales. But, it will still provide you your fill-in-the-blank.
