How long does it take to train a hunting dog?
Ok, im doing a project for school and i need to know special characteristics and what makes Hunting dogs be able to hunt, and i need to know how long it take to train a hunting dog on average!
it can take up to 12 months to train it…but starting in training to sell up to 3 months…my nephew raises beagles he trains then from oct to january but it can take a full 12 months to train a dog to hunt on it’s own not with other dogs…he don’t train his dogs in the spring or summer because the rabbits have young ones…
It all depends on what exactly you want the dog to hunt, whether they are a natural hunting breed or not. There are many variables. Please be more specific.

I own a German Shepherd, and I have taught her to hunt within about 6 months…but "hunting" can mean a lot of different things. A duck fetcher (i.e. a Chesapeake or lab) does not always take long, whereas training a pheasant dog takes months and months…I use the german to hunt small game (primarily rabbits) and that took awhile…
You must start with a very simple, and silent, hold command…if the dog roots around and makes noise when you don’t want the noise, everything else is worthless. Move on to simple object retrieval and move up to blind hiding (preferably w dead rabbits, ducks, etc) and give your largest rewards when they find it…eventually you will be able to direct the dog where to look (for small game, it makes hunting like going to the grocery store) with a progression of hand or whistle commands, starting indoors and moving out to the field.
Most of all, do not take your dog to hunt until you know it is ready…the silent commands, constant waiting, and gunfire are very hard on it mentally if it is not used to them. Get them used to the flow of it, to the sound of the gun, etc, and when you can do dry runs at a range with hidden dead game without signs of fear or hesitation, take them out. Keep them first, and you will end up with a very happy and reliable hunting dog.
