What fishing equipment do I need for fishing along the shore?

Me and my uncle have decided to go fishing along the shore to catch some fish from the sea. I am doing a bit of research on-line, as I have never fished at all before. What equipment would I need? I am not looking for anything too fancy, yet would want something that would work for me to use as a hobby. As I said I have never been fishing before so if possible, please use ’simple’ Fishing terms as I am new to all this. Any help would be much appreciated – thanks!

I have a check list which I look at every single time I’m about to leave because you’d be surprised how often you’ll forget something. For a normal trip out you will need:
Your rod and reel
Your tackle
Your bait
A sharp knife
A chopping board
A bucket to keep your catches in (optional)
A cloth to wipe your hands and hold the fish
Hat and Gloves (optional)
Spare spool of line for making rigs etc.
First aid kit.

Most people start by buying a kit with everything in it, like this one:

A fixed spool reel is fine for shore/pier/rock fishing, but if you decide to hunt bigger prey later on then you’ll need to buy a decent multiplier reel.

I have fished along the shore in the rivers in Canada. All you need is a fishing rod, some fishing line and a hook. There are fancy lures you can use for specific fish that will attract them. You will also need bait (in Canada we use worms and minnows). I think thats all the basics you need to fish off a shore. Good luck :)
